At a certain pressure and `27^(@)C`, the values of `DeltaG and DeltaH` of a process are -400 kJ and 50 kJ respectively. (1) Is the process exothermic? (2) It is spontaneous? (3) Determine entropy change of the process.

Text Solution

(1) As per given data `DeltaH=50kJ`. As the value of `DeltaH` is Positive, it is not an exothermic process.
(2) For the process `DeltaG=-400kJ` at certain pressure and `27^(@)C`. As `DeltaG` is negative, it is a spontaneous process.
(3) `DeltaG=DeltaH-TDeltaS" "therefore -400=50-300xxDeltaS`
or, `DeltaS=1.5kJ*K^(-1)=1500J*K^(-1)`.
