A gas confined in a cylinder with a frictionless piston is made to expand from 1L to 5L under constant pressure of 1.5 atm. During the process, 800J of heat is supplied from external source. Calculate the change in internal energy off the gas. `(1L*atm=101.3J)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know, `w=-P_(ex)(V_(2)-V_(1))`
`therefore w=-1.5(5-1)=-6L*atm=-6xx101.3J=-607.8J`
It is also given that q=+800J
Using the 1st law of thermodynamics, we have
`DeltaU=q+w=(800-607.8)J=192.2J`
`therefore`The change in internal energy of the gas is 192.2 J.
