Find the pH of ann ammonia-ammonium chlo...

Find the pH of ann ammonia-ammonium chloride buffer solution in which `[NH_(3)]=0.2(M) and [NH_(4)^(+)]=0.3(M)`. Given `K_(b)(NH_(3))=1.76xx10^(-5)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`pK_(b)(NH_(3))=-log_(10)K_(b)=-log_(10)(1.76xx10^(-5))=4.7545`
For the given buffer containing `NH_(3) and NH_(4)Cl`,
`pOH=pK_(b)+"log"([NH_(4)^(+)])/([NH_(3)])`
Given, `[NH_(3)]=0.2mol*L^(-1) and [NH_(4)^(+)]=0.3mol*L^(-1)`
`therefore pOH=4.7545+"log"(0.3)/(0.2)=4.93`
`therefore pH` of buffer solution`=14-pOH=14-4.93=9.07`.
