Find [OH^(-)] in pure water if [H(3)O^(+...

Find `[OH^(-)]` in pure water if `[H_(3)O^(+)]` in it is x `mol*L^(-1)`. Also, find the relation between x and `K_(w)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In pure water, `[H_(3)O^(+)]=[OH^(-)]`
Therefore, `[OH^(-)] ` in pure water `=[H_(3)O^(+)]=x" mol"*L^(-1)`
We know, `K_(w)=[H_(3)O^(+)]xx[OH^(-)]," "therefore K_(w)=x xx x`
or, `K_(w)=x^(2)" "therefore x=sqrt(K_(w))`.
