Why does the concentration of OH^(-) ion...

Why does the concentration of `OH^(-)` ions in pure water increase with rise in temperature ? Does this increase make pure water alkaline ? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In pure water, `[OH^(-)]=sqrt(K)_(w)`. `K_(w)` increases with temperature, so does `[OH^(-)]`. This increase in `[OH^(-)]` does not hoewver mean that pure water becomes alkaline at a higher temperature as pure water always contains equal number of `H_(3)O^(+)` and `OH^(-)` ions at any temperature.
