By what factor will the concentration of `H_(3)O^(+)` ions in an aqueous solution in incrased or decreased if its pH is increased by one unit ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If the pH of an aqueous solution soluteion be x, then `[H_(3)O^(+)]` in the solution`=10^(-pH)=10^(-x)mol*L^(-1)`.
Increasing the pH of this solution by one unit makes `pH=1+x`. So, `[H_(3)O^(+)]` in the solution
`=10^(-pH)=10^(-(1+x))=(10^(-x))/(10)mol*L^(-1)`.
Hence, the concentrations of `H_(3)O^(+)` will become `(1)/(10)th` of its initial value when pH is increased by one unit.
