The pH of solution A is twice that of solution B. if the concentrations of `H_(3)O^(+)` ions in A and B are x (M) and y (M), respectively, then what is the relation between x and y?

Text Solution

Given: pH of the solution `A=2xxpH` of the solution B,
`[H_(3)O^(+)]_(A)=xmol*L^(-1) and [H_(3)O^(+)]_(B)=y" "mol*L^(-1)`
Therefore, `-log_(10)[H_(3)O^(+)]_(A)=2xx-log_(10)[H_(3)O^(+)]_(B)`
or, `-log_(10)x=2xx-log_(10)y=-log_(10)y^(2)`
or, `x=y^(2) or, y=sqrt(x)`.
