The values off pH for pure water at `0^(@)C and 25^(@)C` are x and y respectively. Is x greater than or less than y?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

For pure water, `pH=(1)/(2)pK_(w)`. Rise in temperature increases the value of `K_(w).` So, `K_(w)(0^(@)C) lt K_(w)(25^(@)C) &` hence `pK_(w)(0^(@)C) gt pK_(w)(100^(@)C)` as `pK_(w)=-log_(10)K`.
As in case of pure water, `pH=(1)/(2)pK_(w)`, pH of pure water at `0^(@)C` will be greater than that at `25^(@)C`. hence, `x gt y`.
