What colour change does a blue or red litmus paper exhibit when it is put separately in each of the following aqueous solutions ?
`CH_(3)COONa`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

An aqueous solution of `CH_(3)COONa` is alkaline because in solution `CH_(3)COO^(-)` ions resulting from the complete dissociation of `CH_(3)COONa` undergoes hydrolysis, and thereby increases the concentration of `OH^(-)`. So if a red litmus paperr is dipped into thiis solution, it will turn blue.
