Why is an aqueous solution of `NaNO_(3) ` neutral?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`NaNO_(3)` is a salt of strong acid `HNO_(3)` and strong base NaOH. In its aqueous solution, `NaNO_(3)` dissociates completely, forming `Na^(+) and NO_(3)^(-)` ions. In aqueous solution, `Na^(+)(aq)` is a weaker acid than `H_(2)O and NO_(3)^(-)` is a weaker base than `H_(2)O`. so, neither `Na^(+)(aq)` nor `NO_(3)^(-)(aq)` reacts with water. as a result, there is no change in concentration of either `H_(3)O^(+)` ions or `OH^(-)` ions. due to this, an aqueous solution of `NaNO_(3)` is neutral.
