Which one of the following two acids will have a higher concentration of `H_(3)O^(+)` ions in their 0.1(M) aqueous solution- (1) HCl and (2) `CH_(3)COOH`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

HCl is strong acid, while `CH_(3)COOH` is a weak acid. Thus, HCl ionises almost completely in aqueous solution, whereas `CH_(3)COOH` undergoes partial ionisation. As a result the concentration of `H_(3)O^(+)` ions in 0.1 (M) HCl solution is higher than that ini 0.1(M) `CH_(3)COOH` solution.
