Show that `[OH^(-)] gt sqrt(K_(w))` in an alkaline solution.

We know, `[H_(3)O^(+)] xx[OH^(-)]=K_(w)`. I pure water `[H_(3)O^(+)]=[OH^(-)]`. This gives `[H_(3)O^(+)]=[OH^(-)]=sqrt(K_9w))`. In an alkaline solution, the concentration of `OH^(-)` ions is higher than that in pure water. Therefore, in an alkaline solution, `[OH^(-)] gt sqrt(K_(w))`.
