What would the effect on the yield of products be if temperature of the following reaction systems is changed at equilibrium ?
(1) `N_(2)(g)+O_(2)(g)hArr 2NO(g),DeltaH gt0`
(2) `2SO_(2)(g)+O_(2)(g) hArr 2SO_(3)(g),DeltaH lt 0`

Text Solution

Reaction (1) is endothermic (as `DeltaH lt0`). If temperature is increased at equilibrium of this reaction, then the equilibrium will shift to the right, and the yield of products will increase. On the other hand, if the temperature is reduced at equilibrium of the reaction, then equilibrium will shift to the left, and the yield of product will be reduced.
Reaction (2) is exothermic (as `DeltaH lt0`). if temperature is decreased at equilibrium of this reaction, then equilibrium will shift to the right, and the yield of products will increse. on the other hand, if the temperature is increased at equilibrium of the reaction, then equilibrium will shift to the left, and the yield of products will be reduced.
