What will be the change in concentrations of `H_(3)O^(+)` & `OH^(-)` and the ionic product of water `(K_(w))` if NaOH is added to pure water at a certain temperature?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since `K_(w)` is fixed at a certain temperature, it will not undergo any change due to addition of NaOH in pure water. However, the concentration of `OH^(-)` ions increases due to the addition of NaOH, causing the dissociation equilibrium of `H_(2)O` to shift to the left.
`[H_(2)O(l)+H_(2)O(l) hArr H_(3)O^(+)(aq)+OH^(-)(aq)]`
As a result, the concentration of `H_(3)O^(+)` ions in the solution is reduced.
