Do you expect the carbon hydrides of the type `(C_(n)H_(2n+2))` to act as 'Lewis' acid or base? Justify your answer.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The hydrides of carbon of the type `C_(n)H_(2n+2)` are electron-precise hydrides, i.e., they have exact number of electrons in the valence shell of the central atom so as to write their conventional Lewis structures. Therefore, they do not have tendency to either gain or lose electrons and consequently, they do not act as Lewis acids or bases.
