Among `NH_(3), H_(2)O` and HF, which would you expect to have highest magnitude of hydrogen bonding & why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The strength of hydrogen bond depends upon the atomic size and the electronegativity of the atom to which the H-atom is covalently linked. Smaller size and higher electronegativity of the other atom favour formation of stronger H-bonding and that is due to increase in magnitude of bond polarity. Among N, F and O atoms, F has the lowest atomic size and the highest electronegativity. Hence the H-F bond is maximum polar and as a result, it will have the highest magnitude of H-bonding.
