Rationalise the statement and give reaction :
Lead (II) chloride reacts with `Cl_2` to give `PbCl_4`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Pb shows +2 and +4 oxidation states in its compounds. But due to inert pair effect, the +2 oxidation state is more stable than the +4 oxidation state. As a result, lead combines with `Cl_2` to form lead (II) chloride, But, `Cl_2` is an oxidising agent and oxidises `Pb^(2+)` to `Pb^(4+)`. Thus, `PbCl_2`, reacts with `Cl_2` to form `PbCl_4`.
`PbCl_2 + Cl_2 to PbCl_4`
