Is it possible to distinguish between phenylhydrazine hydrochloride and hydrazine hydrochloride by Lassigne's test? Give reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lassaigne's test can be used to distinguish between phenylhydrazine hydrochloride `(C_(6)H_(5)NHNH_(2))` and hydrazine hydro - chloride `(NH_(2)NH_(2) * HCI)`. This is because , the former containing carbon and nitogen produces NaCN when fused with metallic sodium while the latter containing no carbon does not produce NaCN when fused with sodium.
