Tendency of carbon to exhibit catenation...

Tendency of carbon to exhibit catenation is much higher than that of Si and S - why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The C - C bond dissociation enthalpy `(348.6 KJ * mol^(-1))` is much higher than that of Si - Si `(228.4 KJ * mol^(-1))` bond dissociation enthalpies and since the formation of C - C bond is thermodynamically much favourable, the tendency of carbon to exhibit catenation is much higher than that of sillicon and sulphur.
