Both formic acid (HCOOH) and acitic acid `(CH_(3)COOH)` contain the same functional group, yet there are some difference in their chemical properties - explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The structural formula of formic acid is such that it can be said to contain

as well as a `-underset(OH)underset(|)(C)=O` group.
So I t exhibits the properties of both - CHO and - COOH groups. But acetic acid contains only -COOH group and hence it exhibits the propertieis of compound containing only carboxyl group.
