How many chain isomers will be obtained ...

How many chain isomers will be obtained on replacement of different H-atoms of n-pentane ? Write their structures and IUPAC names.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Three types of non-equivalent H-atoms are present in a pentane `(CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2CH_3)` molecule. Thus, replacement of these H-atoms by `-CH_3` groups results in three isomeric alkanes. These are as follows -
`CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2CH_2CH_3` (hexane)
`CH_3CH_2CH_2CH(CH_3)_2` (2-methylpentane)
`CH_3CH_2CH(CH_3)CH_2CH_3` (3-methylpentane)
