Explain each of the following observations:
(iii) The `-OCH_3` group is an activating and o-/p-directing group.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`-OCH_3` group is an o-/p -directing group because unshared pair of electrons on O-atom participate in resonance (+ R -effect ) and increase the electron density of the ring at ortho-and para-positions. So,electrophiles `(E^(oplus))` preferably enter the ortho- and para-positions. Due to increase in electron density, the ring becomes more activated than unsubstitued benzene towards electrophilic substitution reaction. Thus `-OCH_3` is an activating group.
