Write the structure and the name of the monobromoderivative which is obtained as the major product when n-butane reacts with bromine in the presence of light. Why is it produced in larger amount?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

n-butane reacts with bromine in the presence of light to give 2-bromobutane as the major product.
`underset(n-"butane")(CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_3)overset(Br_2)underset("light",127^@C)tounderset(1-"bromobutane (minor) 2- bromobutane (major)")(CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2Br+CH_3CH_2CHBrCH_3)`
The reaction occurs through free radical mechanism . As `2^@` free radical `(CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2)`, displacement of `2^@` H-atom occurs rapidly to give 2- bromobutane as major product.
