Is it possible to isolate pure staggered ethane or pure eclipsed ethane at room temperature ? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The energy difference between eclipsed and staggered conformations of ethane is only `2.8kcal mol^(-1)` which is easily achived by collisions among the molecules at room temperature. So it is not possible to isolate either pure staggered or pure eclipsed form of ethane at room temperature.
