Explain why tert-butylbenzene cannot be oxidisd to benzonic acid by treatment with alkaline `KMnO_4`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Alkybenzene can be oxidised to benzoic acid provided that the side chain contains atleast one benzylic hydrogen atom. Since tert-butylbenzene does not contain any benzylic hydrogen so the alkyl chain cannot be oxidised to `-COOH` group.
