Explain why HF forms hydrogen bonding wi...

Explain why HF forms hydrogen bonding with acetylene even though it is non-polar in nature.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to sp-hybridisation of carbon , the electrons of the C-H bond of acetylene are attracted considerably towards carbon. Consequently each carbon carries a partial negative charge and each hydrogen carris a partical positive charge .Owing to the presence of partial positive charge on hydrogen, acetylene forms H -bond with the F -atom of the HF molecule.
