Calculate the amount of HCOONa that is t...

Calculate the amount of HCOONa that is to be added to 0.05 (M) 1 L HCOOH to make the overall pH of the solution 4.00 (Given : `K_(a)` of HCOOH = `2.4 xx 10^(-4)` ).

Text Solution

According to Henderson's equation
`pH = pK_(a) + "log " ("[Salt]")/("Acid")`
or = - log `(2.4 xx 10^(-4)) + " log " ([HCO O Na])/(0.05)`
or `4 = 3.6 + " log " ([ HCO O Na])/(0.05)`
or log `[(HCO O Na])/(0.05) = 0.4`
or [HCOONa ] = 0.12 `mol * L^(-1)`
So , 0.12 mol of HCOONa should be added to 1L of the solution .
