Which one is more acidic between acetic ...

Which one is more acidic between acetic acid and monochloroacetic and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In chloroacetic acid `(ClCH_(2) CO_(2) H)` , the electronegative Cl atom withdraws electrons by its-1 effect and because of this , the O-H bonding electrons is attracted more towards the oxygen atom . As a consequence, the O-H bond becomes relatively weak compared to that of acetic acid and dissociates easily produce `H^(+)` . Again , more the conjugate base is stable , more the acid is acidic . the same -I effect of chlorine makes the conjugate base of chloroacetic acid `(Cl CH_(2) CO_(2)^(-))` relatively more stable than the conjugate base of acetic acid `(CH_(3) CO_(2)^(-))` . For these reasons , chloroacetic acid is more acidic than acetic acid .
