Determine the amount of electricity of be required to deposit copper of thickness `10^(-3)` cm on a plate having an area of `100cm^(2)` by using copper sulphate solution. [Density of `Cu=8.94g.cm"^(-3)`, atomic mass of Cu = 63.5]

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Area of the plate is `100cm^(2)` and thickness of copper to be deposited is `10^(-3)` cm.
So, volume of copper that will get deposited `=100xx10^(-3)=0.1cm^(3)`.
and weight of this volume of copper `=0.1xx8.94=0.894g`.
Equivalent weight of Cu in `CuSO_(4)=(63.5)/(2)=31.75`.
The amount of electricity to be required to liberate 0.894 g of `Cu=(96500xx0.894)/(31.75)=2717.2C.`
