The standard reduction potentials of Li^...

The standard reduction potentials of `Li^(+)|Li, Na^(+)|Na and Mg^(2+)|Mg` electrodes are `-3.05, -2.17 and -2.37V,` respectively. Which one of `Li^(+),Na^(+) and Mg^(2+)` ions is the strongest oxidising species?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electrode having higher standard reduction potential has higher tendency to get reduced i.e., it acts as a stronger oxidant. Among the given electrodes `Na^(+)|Na` has the highest standard reduction potential and hence `Na^(+)` acts as the strongest oxidant among all.
