What is the role of `ZnCl_(2)` in a Laclanche cell?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`NH_(3)` gas produced in the cell reaction reacts with `ZnCl_(2)`, forming a complex ion `[Zn(NH_(3))_(2)]^(2+)` . This prevents building up of `NH_(3)` also results in higher pressure inside the cell, which may cause rapturing of the cell wall.
