How can the reduction potential of an electrode be increased ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Consider the following half - cell reaction
`"Ox"+"ne" rarr"Red"`
For which the Nernst equation for reduction potnential is.
`E_("Red")=E_("Red")^(@)-(RT)/(nF)ln.("[Red]")/("[Ox]")=E_("Red")^(@)+(RT)/(nF)ln.("[Ox]")/("[Red]")`
From this equation we see that if the concentration of the oxidised form ([Ox]) is increased, keeping the concentration of the reduced form ([Red]) and temperature constant, the value of reduction potential for the electrode increases.
