`MCl_(2) and MCl_(3)` are two chlorides of a metal M. Q coulomb of electricity is separately passed through the molten state of both the compounds. In which case, will the amount of metal deposited at the cathode be higher?

Text Solution

The cathode reaction for the molten `MCl_(2)`:
`M^(2+)+underset(2xx6500C)(2e)rarr underset("1 mol")M`
and that for the molten `MCl_(3):M^(3+)+underset(3xx96500c) rarr underset("1 mol")M`
So, Q coulomb of electricity with deposit `(Q)/(2xx96500C)` mol of M from molten `MCl_(2)` and the some amount of electricity will depsoit `(Q)/(3xx96500)` mol of M from the molten `MCl_(3)`.
Hence, higher amount of M will be deposited in case of `MCl_(2)`.
