Iron can displace Cu from CuSO(4) soluti...

Iron can displace Cu from `CuSO_(4)` solution, but Ag can not. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the electrochemical series, iron occupies a higher position than copper, meaning iron has a smaller standard reduction potential than copper. Hence, iron has greater reducing power than copper. This is why, when iron is added to a `CuSO_(4)` solution, it reduces `Cu^(2+)` ions, and Cu is precipitated.
On the other hand, silver occupies a lower position than copper in the electrochemical series. So, silver has weaker reducing power than copper, and hence it cannot displace copper from `CuSO_(4)` solution.
