Identify `X^(-)` In the following spontaneous reactions `Cl_(2)+2X^(-)+X_(2)` , where `X^(-)` is a halide ion . [ Given `E_((F_(2))|2F^(-))^(@)= +2.87 V , E_(Cl_(2)|2Cl^(-))^(@) = +1.36 V, E_(Br_(2)|2Br^(-))^(@)=+1.06 V and E_(I_(2)|2I^(-))^(@)=+0.54 `]

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since `E_(Cl_(2)|2Cl^(-))^(@)gtE_(Br|2Br)^(0)and E_(I_(2)|2I^(-))^(@),Cl_(2)` is a stronger oxidising agent then either `Br_(2)` or `I_(2)` and `Br^(-)` or `I^(-)` is a stronger reducing agent than `Cl^(-)` .Therefore , `Cl_(2)` will oxidise both `Br^(-) and I^(-)` spontaneously . Hence , X is either `Br^(-) orI^(-)`
