How can the reduction potential of M^(n+...

How can the reduction potential of `M^(n+)|M` electrode be increased at a given temperature ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The Nernst equation for the reduction potential of `M^(n+)|M` electrode is `E=E^(@)-(RT)/(nF)1n ([M])/([M^(n+)]),` where `E^(@)` = standard reduction potential of the electrode , [M] = concentration of M and `[M^(n+)]` = concentration of `M^(n+)` ion . [ M] is taken as unity for a pure metal , So, we can write ` E = E^(@)+(RT)/(nF) 1n [M^(n+)]`
Since `E^(@)` is constant for a given electrode at a given temperature , the value of E can be increased by raising the concentration of `M^(n+)` ions in solutions
