Why is the molar conductivity at infinit...

Why is the molar conductivity at infinite dilution greater than the molar conductivity at any other concentration of an electrolyte at a given temperature ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ions in an infinite dilute solution are far away from each other due to apperciable volume of the solution . This causes the interionic attractions to become significat . Futhermore , an infinitely dilution possesses lower viscosity compared to a solution of any concentration at a given temperature . All these factors favour the ions to attain their maximum mobilities , and hences maximum ionic conductances . As a result , the molar conduction of an electrolyte solution becomes maximum at infinitely dilute state .
