Using the `E^(@)` values of A and B, predict which is better for coating the surface of iron `[E^(@)(Fe^(2+)|Fe)=-0.44V]` to prevent corrosion and why?
`["Given :" E^(@)(A^(2+)|A)=-2.37V, E^(@)(B^(2+)|B)=-0.14V]`

Text Solution

More negative `E^(@)` for `A^(2+)|A` electrode compared to `Fe^(2+)|Fe` electrode means that A undergoes oxidation more readily than Fe. On the other hand, less negative `E^(@)` for `B^(2+)|B` electrode compared to `Fe^(2+)|Fe` electrode means that oxidation tendency to B is less than that of Fe. Therefore, coating iron surface with A will make iron corrosion resistant. This is because when A and Fe are in contact with each other, it is A that undergoes oxidation preferentially.
