Out of Cu^(2+) and Cu^(+), which ion is ...

Out of `Cu^(2+)` and `Cu^(+)`, which ion is unstable in aqueous solution and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Cu^(+)` is unstable in aqueous solution. This is because in aqueous solution `Cu^(+)` undegoes disproportion to form more stable `Cu^(2+)` ion.
`2Cu^(+)(aq)rarr Cu^(2+)(aq)+Cu(s)`
The higher stability of `Cu^(2+)` ion in aqueous solution may be attributed to its greater negative `Delta_(hyd)H^(@)` than that of `Cu^(2+)`. It compensates the second ionisation enthalpy of `Cu` involved in the formation of `Cu^(2+)`.
