Predict if the reaction between the following is feasible :
`Ag^(+)(aq)` and `Cu(s)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A reaction becomes feasible if EMF of cell reaction is `+ve`.
Possible reaction between `Ag^(+)(aq)` and Cu(aq) :
`2Ag^(+)(aq)+Cu(s)rarr Cu^(2+)(aq)+2Ag(s)`
At anode : `Cu rarr Cu^(2+)+2e`,
At cathode : `2Ag^(+)+2e rarr 2Ag`
From the table : `E_(Ag^(+)|Ag)^(@)=0.80 V, E_(Cu^(2+)|Cu)^(0)=0.34 V`
`therefore E_("cell")^(@)=E_("cathode")^(@)-E_("anode")^(@)=0.80-0.34=+0.46 V`
Since `E_("cell")^(@)` is positive, the reaction is feasible.
