Predict if the reaction between the following is feasible :
`Ag(s)` and `Fe^(3+)(aq)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A reaction becomes feasible if EMF of cell reaction is `+ve`.
Possible reaction : `Ag(s)+Fe^(3+)(aq)rarr Ag^(+)(aq)+Fe^(2+)(aq)`
At anode : `Ag(s)rarr Ag^(+)(aq)+e`
At cathode : `Fe^(3+)(aq)+e rarr Fe^(2+)(aq)`
`E_(Ag^(+)|Ag)^(@)=+0.80V, E_(Fe^(3+)|Fe^(2+))^(@)=+0.77V`
`therefore E_("cell")^(@)=E_("cathode")^(@)-E_("anode")^(@)=0.77-0.80=-0.03V`
Since `E_("cell")^(@)` is negative, the reaction is not feasible.
