Predict the products of electrolysis in ...

Predict the products of electrolysis in each of the following :
A dilute solution of `H_(2)SO_(4)` with platinum electrodes.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electrolysis of dilute `H_(2)SO_(4)` with platinum electrodes :
`H_(2)SO_(4)(aq)rarr 2H^(+)(aq)+SO_(4)^(2-)(aq)`
At cathode : `H^(+)+e rarr H, H+H rarrr H_(2)(g)`
At anode : `H_(2)O(l)rarr 2H^(+)(aq)+(1)/(2)O_(2)(g)+2e`
Thus `H_(2)` is liberated at the cathode and `O_(2)` at the anode.
