Solutions of two electrolytes 'A' and 'B...

Solutions of two electrolytes 'A' and 'B' are diluted. The `Lambda_(m)` of 'B' increases 1.5 times while that of A increases 25 times. Which of the two is a strong electrolyte? Justify your answer.

In case of the solution of a strong electrolyte, the number of ions in solution does not increase with dilution of the solution since a strong electrolyte dissociates almost completely in its solution at all concentration. But the increase in dilution of the solution at all concentration. But the increase in dilution of the solution reduces the interionic attractions, making the ions to more with higher velocity. This results in increase in `Lambda_(m)` of the solution with dilution, through the increase does not occur as markedly as it occurs when the solution of a weak electrolyte is diluted. In case of the solution of a weak electrolyte, the marked increase in `Lambda_(m)` with dilution occurs due to the increased number of ions arising from increased ionisation of the ions arising from increased ionisation of the electrolyte. Hence, 'B' is a strong electrolyte
