When acidulated water (dil. `H_(2) SO_(4)` solution) is electrolysed, will pH of the solution be affected? Justify.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electrolysis of acidulated water involves the following cathode and anode reactions : Cathode: `2H_(2)O(l)+2e rarrH_(2)(g)+2OH^(-)(aq)`,
Anode : `H_(2)O(l)rarr2H^(+)(aq)+(1)/(2)O_(2)(g)+2e`, Therefore, number of moles of `OH^(-)` ions produced in the cathode reaction is the same as that of `H^(+)` ions produced in the anode reaction. Hence, pH of the solution will not be affected
