The molar conductivity at infinite dilut...

The molar conductivity at infinite dilution of an electrolyte reaches its maximum value. Explan.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

For the solutions of both strong and weak electrolytes, molar conductivity increases with dilution of the solutions. The relation, `Lambda_(m)=kappaxx(1000)/(M)`, shows that molar conductivity `(Lambda_(m))` depends on specific conductances `(kappa)` and molarity of the solution (M). With dilution, both `kappa` and M decreases. But the decrease in M or increase in `(1)/(M)` is greater as compared to the decrease in `kappa`. As a result, molar conductivity increases with dilution of the solution and its value attains a maximum when the solution is infinitely diluted.
