Alum is used to treat minor cuts after shaving . Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Blood is a colloidal solution of albumin with negatively charged particles, while alum is an effective coagulant with positively charged `(Al^(3+))` ions. `Al^(3+)` ions of alum neutralise the negative charges on the colloidal particles and cause coagulation. Thus, blood clots around the wound. Hence, a piece of alum rubbed after shaving prevents bleeding.
