Why does the colour of the sun appear red during sunset?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lower layers of the atmosphere contain plenty of dust particles forming a colloidal system in which dust particles constitute dispersed phase and air is the dispersion medium. During sunset, sunlight passes through the lower layers of the atmosphere and gets scattered by dust particles. The phenomenon of scattering of light by dust particles is called Tyndall effect. As a result, the sun appears red during sunset.
