In the soild state , `PCl_(5)` exists in the lonic form as `[PCl_(4)]^(+) [PCl_(6)]^(-)`. What are the shapes of these two ions ? Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In solid state , `PCI_(5)` exists in the forms as `[PCl_(4)]^(+)` and `[PCl_(6)]^(-)`. The shapes of `[PCl_(4)]^(+)` and `[PCl_(6)]^(-)` ions are tetrahedral and octahedral by undergoing `sp^(3)` and `sp^(3),d^(2)` - hybridisation respectively.
