In aquesou solution, `HNO_(3)` ionises to give `H_(3)O^(+)` and `NO_(3)^(-)` ions.
`HNO_(3)(aq) + H_(2)O(l) hArr H_(3)O^(+)(aq) + NO_(3)^(-)(aq)`
The shape of `H_(3)O^(+)` and `NO_(3)^(-)` ions are respectively pyramidal (`sp^(3)` - hydridised)ad trigonal planar (`sp^(3)` hydridised).
