Explain why iron and aluminium do not dissolve in conc. `HNO_(3)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Iron (Fe) and aluminium (Al) readily dissolve in dilute nitric acid but not in conc. Nitric acid. Because concentrated `HNO_(3)` reacts with Fe and Al and froms a metal oxide layer on the respective metals that protects the bluk of the metal from further oxidation . The formation of this protective layer is called passivation . Hence , Fe and Al do not dissolve in conc. `HNO_(3)`
